Gum disease can cause serious issues, not just for the teeth and gums but with overall health. When gum disease is at its worst, it is referred to as advanced periodontal disease. The fibers and bone that are around the teeth become destroyed during the last stages of gum disease. If aggressive methods do not work in an attempt to save the teeth, then they will have to be removed. Gum disease can be caused by many different things, one of them being poor oral hygiene. Improper care of the teeth and gums can result in a build up of tartar and plaque at the gum line. If this happens, then the gums can become inflamed and the pockets that form at the gum line will become filled with tartar and plaque. Plaque is full of bacteria and when the tartar and plaque are not removed from the pockets, infection follows and normally the teeth can become abscessed. This is how gum disease begins and if not treated can lead to advanced periodontal disease. Practicing good oral hygiene is the way to prevent periodontal disease. Daily brushing and flossing of the teeth, along with getting regular dental checkups and having your teeth professionally cleaned, can go a long way in keeping them healthy. If an individual has gingivitis, then this can also lead to the advanced, stage two periodontitis. Making sure that treatment is received for gingivitis can ensure that it does not develop into the more serious condition. Taking the steps to prevent gum disease is the best way to make sure that you never have to have tooth replacement or dental work for reversing gum disease from periodontitis. The best way to prevent the development of advanced periodontal disease is to take preventative care of the teeth and gums in the first place. This can be done by taking good care of both the gums and the teeth and also making sure that dental checkups are kept. Having your teeth professionally cleaned not only gets the teeth sparkling, but also goes a long way in making sure that the mouth stays healthy.
